It is the world’s first and most comprehensive franchise ranking. The 2024 Entrepreneur Franchise 500® ranks Filta as #266 for our outstanding performance in unit growth, financial strength and stability, and brand power, among others. The 2024 ranking moves us up 51 spots this year.

CEO Tom Dunn

“We are extraordinarily proud of our 2024 ranking,” said Filta CEO Tom Dunn. “After all, we moved up 50 plus slots in just a year’s time. We are grateful for this recognition from Entrepreneur. But we’re not at all surprised because each one of our local franchise owners puts in the hard work daily. Our staff in our Orlando support center does as well. We are excited about showcasing our capabilities in commercial kitchens across the nation this year. We aim to surpass our achievements and attain an even more impressive rank by 2025.”

What Filta Does

Filta makes commercial kitchens faster, greener, safer, and cleaner. We do this by micro-filtering cooking oil and providing bin-free waste oil collection. Additionally, we’re deep cleaning fryers, and recycling waste oil for biodiesel fuel. Nationwide, we serve customers ranging from independent, chain, and franchised restaurants. Our service doesn’t stop there. We also work in commercial kitchens inside hospitals, hotels, groceries, universities, casinos, business facilities, stadiums (MLB, NBA, NCAA, NFL, NHL, etc.), and more.

Filta Named a Top Franchise Entrepreneur 500

“Every brand on the Franchise 500 has its own unique story, but they all collectively make the same statement: franchising is strong and resilient, is full of innovation and opportunity, and provides a powerful entrepreneurial path for many people,” says Jason Feifer, editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine. “Our 45th annual ranking is full of companies with fresh ideas, exciting business models, cultural sway, and the kind of business sophistication that will define the next 45 years and beyond.”

Did you know that Filta Environmental Kitchen Solutions serves more than 50 Dairy Queens nationwide? In fact, three Filta owners were recently highlighted in Retail & Restaurant Facility Business for their Dairy Queen work.
Terry Walkerly serves nine Dairy Queens in northern Ohio. One has been a Filta customer as long as 15 years. At all the restaurants, Terry’s team microfilters existing oil to extend its life (FiltaFry). Additionally, he picks up waste oil to be recycled for biodiesel fuel (FiltaBio). Regardless of which service, all Filta franchise owners will customize their approach to meet the unique needs of individual kitchens.

“We’ll adjust service based on seasonality, usage and basically any type of service the individual Dairy Queen wants,” said Melissa Smith-Hignite, Walkerly’s VP of sales and marketing.

“Zach came in and offered a trial,” said Dharmesh Makwana, Steelton Dairy Queen Grill & Chill Owner. “They cleaned the fryer once and the chicken strips were coming out golden brown instead of dark. I never have bad reviews. Sales for my fried products have doubled since I started working with Filta.”

A trio of local Filta Environmental Kitchen Solutions franchise owners are making kitchens faster, cleaner, safer, and greener at the home field of Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies and many other venues.

Filta Franchise Owner Interview

Filta co-owner DJ Kayl was interviewed by ABC-TV affiliate, Denver 7 last month. He shares how Filta helps commercial kitchens decrease carbon footprints by making cooking oil last longer. This happens through microfiltration and recycling into biodiesel. In addition to Coors Field, Filta also services the NBA Champion Denver Nuggets’ Ball Arena. Filta also works in Dick’s Sporting Goods Park where the Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids play. Furthermore, Filta also services Red Rocks Amphitheater, which is considered one of the top concert venues in the nation.

Franchisee Backgrounds

DJ Kayl, Damon Wanco, and Hugh Roberts all have diverse professional backgrounds that prepared them for their current Filta franchise ownership.

DJ spent 10 years with Servpro and another 10 years with US Bank. Damon worked in his family’s landscaping business for more than a dozen years. Prior to landscaping, he spent 15 years in the hotel and casino industry where he managed operations. This prepared him to run day-to-day operations at Filta. Hugh has more than two decades of sales and development experience in the medical device field.

The business partners are looking forward to further expansion across Denver and the Colorado Front Range.

Per the Miami Herald: Filta’s Miami-Dade Franchisees Filtered, Collected Oil to Recycle for Biodiesel, Saving 280 Tons of Carbon Emission in 2022. Miami Herald climate change reporter Nicolas Rivero recently spoke with Cristian Nechuta, co-owner of the Miami-Dade County Filta franchise. In the story he details how this one franchise is positively impacting the environment.

In 2022 the Miami-Dade franchise collected 23,000 gallons of cooking oil that was recycled into biodiesel. This prevented about 230 tons of carbon emissions. Using microfiltration, the franchise helped customers stretch the life of their current oil. This prevented them from buying another 21,000 gallons of oil. It also eliminated another 50 tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. This had a total positive impact of 280 tons of carbon emissions reduction for the year.

Three franchise territories serve South Florida: Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County. Nechuta co-owns the Miami-Dade franchise with Sergio Moya. Their business filters recycles oil into biodiesel from a host of commercial kitchens in restaurants. These include Cerveceria La Tropical in Wynwood (which was a major focus of the Miami Herald article) and hospitals like Jackson Health System and the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. They also work with universities like Florida International University and Miami-Dade College. Additionally, they service stadiums like LoanDepot Park where the Miami Marlins play and the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Furthermore Filta Miami-Dade works in corporate dining and kitchens at Telemundo, Royal Caribbean, FPL and the Burger King headquarters.

The article concludes with the following statement attributed to George Philippidis, director of the sustainable energy concentration at the University of South Florida: “There isn’t enough used cooking oil in the world to meet all of our fuel needs…but because biofuels made from used cooking oils emit less carbon than biofuels made from other feedstocks, it’s a good idea to recycle every drop of cooking oil companies like Filta can collect.”

When Filta launched its Franchise system in the U.S. in 2002, large commercial kitchens inside stadiums, universities, restaurants, and corporate employee cafeterias were the standard client base, but just recently amusement parks have been high on Filta’s radar with several notable successes.

Recently InPark Magazine published a feature profiling how Filta is saving money, time and the valuable resource of oil for theme parks nationwide like Hersheypark in Pennsylvania, Wild Waves Theme and Waterpark in Seattle, LEGOLAND, Trader’s Village in Houston, and many more.

In that magazine article, Michelle Phy, revenue manager at Alabama Adventure & Splash Adventure shared that “Filta has been cleaning our fryers for over two years…Filta comes in, gets the job done and leaves the restaurants cleaner than when they started.”

And Olivia Haist, concessions manager for Hersheypark, noted her park maintains oil quality for longer periods of time thanks to filtration and that’s a win not only for the environment but for savings all around in the Pennsylvania park.

“At the end of each year we get to see how our partnership has had a positive impact on efforts like reducing greenhouse gasses and saving in packaging,” Haist said.

These positives were all shared just last week at the annual Amusement & Theme Park Food Service Conference Trade Show hosted by Cedar Fair in Sandusky, Ohio. Towanda Crawley-Taylor (National Accounts Manager), Ben Gofton (Business Development Representative) and Melissa Smith-Hignite (VP of Sales and Marketing for the Cedar Point-area Franchise) were the Filta executives that met with a host of attendees to share how filtration saves not only time and money for kitchens but has also a huge positive impact on the environment and increases a park’s sustainability footprint.
